HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
(KAG) Mathare Children Development Centre is a Primary and Secondary mixed day and boarding school located in Dandora, off Komarock road. It began in 1995 when Mr. and Mrs. Nyuthu took over the KAG Huruma Church. They began a feeding programme that originally included 12 boys who used to help in the cleaning of the church compound every Saturday. The programme gradually attracted children who were mostly destitute or orphaned. Subsequently, Mr. and Mrs. Nuthu started a parallel education programme based in Huruma in the year 2000. It was from this programme that (KAG) Mathare Children Development Center was founded in Huruma. The student population grew tremendously therefor prompting the opening of a second center in Dandora.
From the original 12 boys the school’s population has steadily grown to a total of 1205 students in both Huruma and Dandora centers. Dandora Center has 80 boarders, 545 day scholars and 60 staff members.
The centers have a strong donor based system whereby donors channel contributions to one representative who then channels it to either the education or feeding programme. In the Dandora center, 80% of the current students are under scholarship, 25 alumni are in various universities under scholarships and 15 have already joined the working force.
The school comprises of 20 classrooms, 3 dormitories, 3 halls (1 primary school hall, 1 secondary school hall and a communal dining hall), school bus, they also have meal plans which involve:
